They charged Gordon Fairlie on the forty-fourth hour, four hours inside Reyes’s own deadline, and Siobhan understood, watching the decision assemble itself across a morning of increasingly urgent conversations she was no longer fully included in, that the charge had less to do with any new evidence arriving overnight than with the specific, gravitational pull of a deadline finally running out.
