Morag Sinclair was found dead on a Thursday morning, eleven days after the man in the good coat had stood on her doorstep and asked politely for a glass of water, and Siobhan understood, standing in the cold, salt-heavy air outside the cottage with Melissa beside her, that eleven days had been exactly long enough for a stretched, under-resourced patrol rota to quietly, reasonably, inevitably thin itself down to nothing.
