Dugald Ross lived in a cottage that was too small for a man of his size. He was sixty-eight, heavy across the chest, harbour master's kind of weathering, though he had not been harbour master for ten years. He had a boat, or had had a boat, and he had a reputation for not talking about 1987, which in a town like Kinloch was itself a form of talking.
