Brannigan was waiting on Fair Wind’s aft deck, alone, or apparently alone, the marina dark and shrink-wrapped and empty around them, every other boat on the pontoon standing silent under its winter cover, the specific total silence of a place built entirely for a season that had already ended weeks ago and showed no sign, tonight, of any life stirring anywhere along its length.
