Malcolm Reith answered his own front door slowly, leaning heavily on a stick, a tall, stooped man whose once-considerable frame had shrunk with age into something frail and careful, and Melissa realised that he had been expecting a visit very much like this one for longer than she’d allowed herself to hope.
