Cassel was sitting upright when Melissa arrived, more alert than she’d expected given the lateness of the hour, his laptop balanced carefully on the hospital bed’s own adjustable tray, and she realised that whatever had prompted tonight’s urgent call had cost him a great deal of his own carefully rationed strength to properly chase down.
