Chapter 3

The loft ladder still creaked in exactly the same place it always had, third rung from the top, and Melissa stood at the bottom of it for a long moment before climbing, understanding that she was about to do something she had spent twenty years quietly, deliberately avoiding, and that no amount of standing at the bottom of a familiar ladder was going to make the climbing itself any easier.
