The pressure to formally close the investigation arrived within a week of Prentice's death, and Melissa understood, watching Reyes absorb yet another call from a considerably more senior office than his own, that this particular institutional instinct — a tidy, public resolution, offered exactly when the actual evidence remained genuinely incomplete — had apparently survived every previous lesson this whole two-year reckoning had already, painfully, taught the wider force.
