Prentice's own solicitor contacted Melissa directly, nine days after his client's death, and Melissa understood, taking the call at her own desk on a wet Tuesday afternoon with the low Highland light already failing against the station windows, that whatever this particular conversation contained, it had arrived with exactly the kind of professional formality that suggested careful, deliberate advance preparation rather than any ordinary settling of a deceased man's affairs.
